Homemade Applesauce

Okay it has been a minute... The Holtzem household has been busy! We now have a little 5 month old named Aiden, and he is a joy. We love him so much. After taking off some time from making recipes and recording books, we are back on. There are several new books on Holtzem Family Reads, new Magic Treehouse, and some from Brooklyn and Bennett, like Owl Diaries and Fat Cat.

We have a new milestone for Holtzem Family Reads and I can’t wait to share it with you! Make sure to subscribe to the blog posts so you don’t miss it!

I was making something today and I thought I'd write it down and add it to the blog. I found myself with about 30 old apples. Some from apple picking, and then just leftover apples that get left behind after I buy new ones and ignore the fruit that is there. These apples are not apples you'd want to eat, they're wrinkly and have bruises and such.

No thanks.

So I took off the stems and cut them in half (that's right, no peeling or dicing) and threw them in a pot.

"Wait a minute! What about the seeds? " you might say. "They're gross! and poisonous!"

You’ll be okay. But if you want to take them out, take them out.

This took me a few minutes, and I just let the apples cook on the stove while I went about my business. You can also use a slow cooker.

Homemade applesauce tastes SO much better than store bought. So much. Plus, it’s another money saver to just make it yourself.

Homemade Applesauce Ingredients:

8-12 apples, halved

2 cups water

2 T cinnamon, or to taste

Instructions:

1.Combine all ingredients in large pot.

2. Cook until apples are soft, about 20 minutes.

3. Allow mixture to cool, blend with an immersion blender, you can also use a food processor or blender.

4. Divide into mason jars, refrigerate.

You can add some sugar if you’d like, a few tablespoons, but I think it tastes great unsweetened.
